This year has been pretty crazy. But as the year comes to a close most news, blogs and other media will be doing a year in review. So I am taking some time to write my top 10 games of the year. These games are not exactly games that came out in 2020, or reviewed in 2020, but games that I played.
10: Fallout 4
Fallout 4 was released like 5 years ago, when it first came out I loved having another fallout game. But it was ultimately a little disappointing. Even with DLC, there was only 3 I enjoyed and only 2 that I wanted to play multiple times. Bugs and lack luster writing kinda did this one in. However coming back to it this year I got some more mods for it and I gotta say, the mods make it all better. With the right combo of mods this game can be made truly excellent. For me I decided to overhaul the survival mode, story, and some weapons/armor, to make the survival mode much more interesting. Having no bullet sponge enemies but also not being one yourself definitely makes the game more engaging. It also makes the settlement building so much more necessary and not a waste of time.
9: Cyberpunk 2077
Now this one may be controversial to even have on here. So many are angry about the bugs, broken promises and general shenanigan's surrounding this game. But to be honest, I enjoyed the game. Now Maybe I should thank God that I have a PC that can even run the game at a playable frame rate and decent graphics. But if the system can run it, the bugs are generally not many and that save file issue has yet to happen to me. One of my friends was even able to play on his xbox one, and he has one of the older ones. Maybe we are just blessed it ran, I don't know. But it really is a fun game with a interesting story and world. Plus maybe with a metric ton of fixes, and enabling mods, this game can have a new life in two years or so.
8: Apex Legends season 6
Speaking of bug this game barely made it into this list. I still can't even play it on my xbox. It keeps crashing, I can only play on my pc. I really don't even like battle royals that much but this one sucked me in with the comics and story being connected to titan fall. plus some of the interesting character and map designs. But seriously respawn, it is pretty much unplayable on xbox. please fix it.
7: Call of Duty Cold War
Now this is one game that I liked with pretty much no issues. It is a Call of Duty game, hits all the cues and has even has a nice twist. Not everyone liked the changes, and it has a lack of guns. But not having unexpected crashes or a huge list of bugs, while also being Call of Duty basic formula refined to a fine snort able dust give it this spot.
6: Xcom Chimera squad
I know I complained about stuff in my review of this, however this game was pretty fun. Put a interesting twist on the Xcom Formula, while still being Xcom. it also had no glitches or even bugs that I saw other than the cinematic camera looking at the wall. Also having the squad mates interacting and having story significance also helped humanize my sucide squads. Too bad squad mates can't die in this game.
5: Half Life Alyx
Alright this was one of the first VR titles I have ever played and due to framerate drops still have not beaten. But damn is it fun. It's a full half life game and really shines with the differences in how you can play now that VR has come so far. Ducking in cover as bullets sore overhead, and peak out to pop off a few shots is awesome. Headcrabs are now even more terrifying. I even sometimes shoot my gun just so I can reload it. Only thing they have to figure out now is how to make it so you can move without disorienting people so bad, and lower the cost of VR in general.
4: Among us
This game became a huge hit in some circles for like a month or two. Its a very simple game and has a very simple loop. But especially with friends this game couldn't be more fun. The simplicity and tightness of the game is it's strength. it has other flaws, but this game has is just so simple. It separates its self from others like trouble in terrorist town by not allowing people to talk until the meetings. However sometimes people use the kill everyone until someone wins approach and gives a good argument against democracy. But man is it fun.
3: Pathfinder King Maker
This game really is a gem. Love the DND world and character building system. Using text to depict the events which allows for more options and outcomes. It looses some points with how long it takes to travel and timed quests. They at least make it so you have to chose what to prioritize. The kingdom management also has some of these issues as well but was a really cool twist since I thought the game would end after the initial quest was done.
2: Star Wars squadrons
Another new game from EA, and tried to come out under my radar. Luckly some church friends brought it to my attention. It is very disorienting sometimes, but really fun. get to fly iconic ship types. I love fleet battles using the Y-wing with a rotary cannon. It even has a mildly entertaining single play as well. It would be game of the year if it had more content and people behind it. But to expect EA to place effort behind a game without live services is to much.
1: Event [0]
This game is simple like really simple, it has a very simple story and simple to understand loop. But oh man, its been a while since a game had me so confused and intrigued. Gives me vibes I haven't felt since portal. A empty space ship, a AI that isn't making sense. It is a game about puzzles, empathy and mystery. It has no glitches I can see. It has a cool plot that requires you to pay attention and think about what is going on. No way points, no easy to solve problems. Even requires you to remember the backstory you chose. Don't forget a detail it may mean life or death. I love it, and it earns my game of the year for 2020.
Hope anyone reading this has a great 2021 or the strength to get through this next year at least.
