As I live and breath they did it! they finally released the update that adds the rest of the game. It's been nearly two years! two years of microtransations expanding, first membership stuff, a couple nice updates. But still two years. But they did it. Wastelanders is here and I hope it gets more updates.
whats new
Ok. I will bring it down, whats new?
Well they added a story, NPCs, Quest types, and locations, enemies, to start. Each has a lot of implications for future content and current content.
The story is fairly simple to start off. Raiders who were buds of roses have returned, and some new settlers have come seeking greener pastures. The
Overseer though wants you to help get them inoculated against the scorched.
there also seems to be someone telling people there is a treasure buried in the area. They can be found outside of vault 76.
Onto NPC, they have added quite a few NPC to interact with. Most quest givers will be in instanced areas. This allows them to have choices specific to the individual player. You interact with NPC through Fallout 3/NV styled dialog trees and also have the regular skill check. This personally made me really happy. It gives S.P.E.C.I.A.L points a purpose for the story. In Fallout 4 I was quite annoyed that they got rid of such choices, but now that they are back I am really happy. Though the world it's self still feels a bit lonely since there aren't any NPC moving around settlements or anything.
The changes to how quests work is simple. You have squares for main story, and diamonds for side missions. As for new quest types I have encountered Ally quests. Well one of them. From what I saw this type involves the player finding a NPC and getting a specific quest to help them. It will be labeled Ally quest. In my case it was an astronaut who had been in space since 2070. After helping her a bit she went to my C.A.M.P and is there giving me more missions for her quest line. I have high hopes for this mission type.
The new locations have also been added. This was shown in the adverts so I don't think going into them is going to be impressive. But they have the foundation and space station camp. They also added the Wayward and Overseers house.
Now I had seen the Ads with the new enemies however I thought that was going to be something else. but there is definitely something supernatural going on. While on a walk back from a mission I encountered two elementals attacking me. They were similar to a floating squid. Close in appearance to the big head guys from Half Life 1. I now want to find out what is going on with this. The main story seems pretty basic. But these guys, they interest me.
final impressions
though the game still has a ways to go, I was impressed with Wastelanders. It has convinced me to have another go at playing. The new enemies, dialog and new quest type are the highlights for me. I hope they continue to have updates like this one and not like the one that added repair kits as a transaction. May even support the game by buying a transaction if they do well with subsequent updates. If you already own the game I would encourage you to give it another try. If you don't own it and like fallout but wish it were online. Well this can finally be basically that. Get it on sale if you can.
